Separation Supports
Navigating Separation After 25 Years: My Story & Helpful Tips
Hello, my name is Carol and after 25 years of marriage and raising two wonderful children, I never imagined I'd find myself here -navigating the emotional and practical challenges of a separation. If you’re in a similar situation, I want you to know that you're not alone. The road ahead can feel overwhelming, but there is help, support, and even hope for a new chapter.
Here are some things that helped me, and I hope they might help you too:
1. Allow Yourself to Grieve
The end of a long marriage is a huge loss, even if it’s the right decision. Give yourself time to process the emotions—shock, sadness, anger, relief—all of it is valid.
2. Seek Legal & Financial Advice Early
Understanding your rights and obligations is crucial. Speak to a solicitor who specialises in family law. FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centres) offers free legal guidance: www.flac.ie.
3. Prioritise Your Children’s Well-being
If you have kids, their emotions will be all over the place too. Try to keep communication open and reassure them that both parents will continue to love and support them. One Family Ireland offers great parenting and mediation support: www.onefamily.ie.
4. Protect Your Mental Health
Separation can take a huge toll on your mental well-being. Don’t be afraid to seek counselling—there are many free or affordable options in Ireland. Check out The Tivoli Institute for councelling and Psychotherapy support, from personal experience they have saved me. They offer a low cost councelling service and honestly it was the best thing I did for myself. www.tivoliinstitute.com.
5. Surround Yourself with Support
You don’t have to go through this alone. Talk to close friends, join a support group, or reach out to others who understand. Accord provides relationship and separation support: www.accord.ie.
6. Take One Day at a Time
There will be good days and bad days, but keep going. Life will look different, but it can also be filled with new opportunities, personal growth, and happiness.
If you’re facing this journey, I hope you find strength and support. Please feel free to reach out, join one of our walking clubs, attend an event - we are here if you need someone to talk to. You’re not alone.
